ASTURIAS Information |

It is hard to say whether the people of Asturias prefer nature in
its purest state, the rural village life or the modern urban world.
With almost 250 kilometres of coastline, the region has enviable
beaches and impressive cliff faces dropping down into the water.
Asturias covers 10,604 square kilometres, and for many visitors
is the land of the Picos de Europa, el Naranjo de Bulnes, the "divine
gorge" of El Cares, the lakes of Covadonga or the Sella descent.
The region's humidity and its temperate climate explain the abundance
of oak and beech forests, home to Spain's largest concentrations
of brown bear, chamois and grouse. The area's clean, cold rivers
are unrivalled for trout and salmon fishing.
This is also the land of Asturian art, which in a highly original
way assimilates the influences of all Western traditions, from Roman
to Carolingian art. The major monuments built according to this
tradition have been declared World Heritage sites.
The gastronomy of Asturias includes cider, cheeses, fabada (bean
stew) and rockfish casserole. The Asturians themselves are known
for their vitality, creativity and hospitality.
