It is a region full of contrasts, from the mountainous,
rough landscape of its "sierras" (mountain ranges), to the
rich lowland areas, moving from an altitude of 2,060 metres on its
highest peak, to sealevel in the heart of the Costa del Sol. Such
diversity can be made extensive to its fauna and flora, which form
the Natural Park of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountains.
The continuous transit of cultures, and the great number of settings,
have formed a valuable artistic heritage, of which Mudejar style is
the main example. The roughness of the land has given way to a number
of natural viewpoints, and given shelter to different species, now
protected as part of an officially appointed Natural Park. Oil, raisins,
wine, fruits, vegetables, honey, traditional bakery, cold meats...
mingle in just a few square metres, which result in an equally varied
production as response to the excellent local climate. All this diversity
is best witnessed following five different routes. In the "Sun
and Avocado Route" we find Macharaviaya , home to historical
heritage related to the conquest of America, while wine is produced
and raisins and sub-tropical fruits are grown in Benamocarra, Iznate
and Benamargosa.
The Treasure Cave (also known as the Big Fig-Tree Cave) in Rincon
de La Victoria is the main spot with prehistoric remains. The "Sun
and Wine Route" comprises Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Competa, Canillas
de Albaida, Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana, famous for Muscatel Wine
and the beauty of the Almijara mountain range. Frigiliana's old town
is truly aastonishing. And, of course, Nerja, a real paleolithic cathedral
due to its famous caves. The "Mudejar Route" is best enjoyed
through a relaxed walk around the minarets in villages such as Arenas,
Archez, Salares, Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno, which also serve
as access to the Natural Park. Moclinejo, Almachar, El Borje, Comares,
Cutar and Totalan form the "Raisin Route". The diversity
of vineyards around Alexandria's muscatel grape results in a unique
product. Finally, the "Oil and Mountains Route" is set around
La Viñuela, Alcaucin, Periana, Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Riogordo
and Colmenar, where olive trees form a landscape which deserves a
special mention. In the mountain area of Colmenar, Alfarnate, Alfarnejo
or Periana, the "Tajos" (impressively steep cliffs) form
a beautiful landscape, which becomes smoother around the dam in La
Viñuela.
