Costa del Sol information: MIJAS

Mijas General information

Mijas is located in the west of Costa del Sol. The mountain offers a very abrupt paronama, but smoothed by the pinegroves that embellish the area and emphasize the beauty of the village, resembling a great white sea watchtower. The mountain offers a contrast to the traveller, with a labyrinth of hills, and the villas with ornamental plants along the way. The valley of the river Fuengirola is in the central zone, along with agricultural areas, and some golf coourses, changing the traditional image.

The origins of the village go back to remote times, evidence of this is found in the various remains found both in the hill where the parochial church stands, and other places nearby. Tarnisa, Mijas former name in Roman times, was conquered by commander Muza's son very early.

Mijas has reached a great tourist development, because of both the beautiful beaches, and charm of the old town, even though the town is about 8 km away from the coast. The famous "plaza de toros" (bullring) is worth to have a look at, as it has an irregular shape. The town also boast two Mudejar-style churches, and the Sanctuary of La Virgen de la Peña (Virgin of the Rock), patron saint of the village. Donkey-taxis are very typical; you can reach the harbour hermitage on one of them.

Mijas is an ideal place to go shopping for "souvenirs" from Costa del Sol. The popular crafts stands out. You should also try the honey and the bread "cateto", and see some embossed pieces in silver, the esparto and the wickerwork. The local bank holidays take places on January 17th, the first fortnight of September and October 15th. The holiday of January 17th is San Anton's festivity, and a pilgrimage is made to the hermitage. In September it is La Virgen de la Peña's. Popular dances, such as Mijas-style Fandanfo, are popular. They used to dance Fandango on religious ceremonies such as weddings and baptisms.
