GALICIA Provinces - MONDOÑEDO
Information |

|
MONDOÑEDO. In
1156 the old town of Villa Maior, the capital of the bishopric from
1117, was promoted to the status of city by Alphonso VII. This clioice
was not at random, for the town lies in a fertile valley within easy
reach of the sea. From the 16th century to 1834 it was one of the
seven capital cities that formed the Kingdom of Galicia.
The oldest and most significant building here is the cathedral. It
was begun in 1219 and consecrated in 1248 by Bishop Martin. The peaceful
streets and squares of Mondonedo are filled with old buildings, monasteries
and churches. Fonte Vella dates from the 16th century, but most buildings,
like the Sanctuary de los Remedios (of the Remedies), the Town Hall
and the Royal Seminary of Santa Catalina -with later expansions-,
were built in the 18th century. The Monastery "dos Picos"
stands on one of the hills that surround the city. It was founded
in the 14th century, but these buildings date from the 18th century.
There is a splendid view from it, as from several roads that lead
to Mondonedo. Next to one of these lies the cemetery where Alvaro
Cunqueiro is buried. This writer dedicated many pages to speaking
about his home town, some of them referring to its feast of Saint
Luke. |
