The archipelago is made
up of three main islands, Majorca, Menorca and Eivissa, two smaller
islands, Formentera and Cabrera, and over two hundred rocky isles,
islets and dots of land in the sea. The island nearest the Peninsula
is Eivissa, and the furthest, Minorca. Neither to the north nor the
south do their parallels extend beyond the region of Valencia. Despite
the different personality of each island, there has always been a
difference between Eivissa and Formentera and the other isles.

Among the kingdoms of Spain, the island's capital has always been
a unique entity.
The importance of its architecture is demonstrated above all by the
Cathedral. It stands on the site of a former mosque, which left its
mark on the orientation and structure of the square tower. Begun at
the beginning of the fourteenth century and built almost entirely
